Vision
Standards for Indian Air Force Flying Branch
Joining Indian Air Force flying branch is a
challenging task, not only the selection process, but the medical standard
required for Indian Air force flying branch is a tough nut to crack. In this post
we will discuss more about the eye or vision related standards required for
flying branch (Pilot entry). We all know that for flying, vision plays a
very important role so the medical standards for IAF flying branch is higher
than any other entry/branch.
Indian Air Force
Vision Medical Standards
ü One must have 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in other, which can be
correctable to 6/6 only for hypermetropia.
ü Vision Defects
ü Manifest hypermetropia must not exceed +2.0D Sphere.
ü No Myopia.
ü Astigmatism must be +0.75 D Cyl with +2.0 D maximum
ü Near Vision must
be N-5 each eye.
ü Near vision is determined using "Times Roman" type
and is assessed at reading distance (30-50 cm) and at 100 cm. The 100-cm
distance is important in the aircraft cockpit and similar environments and for
users of CRT displays. When two values are shown, such as N5 and N14, the first
value refers to the reading distance (30-50 cm) and the second value to the
100-cm distance.
ü Color Vision must be CP-1(ML T). Color Perception-1:
The correct recognition of coloured lights shown through the paired apertures
on the Holmes-Wright lantern at LOW BRIGHTNESS at 6 metres (20 feet) distance
in complete darkness.
Ø LASIK Surgery
ü LASIK Surgery for correction of vision is admissible in
Transport and Helicopter streams of Short Service Commission (Flying Branch) If
the following condition are fulfilled at the time of Air Force medical
examination.
ü LASIK Surgery should not have been carried out before the
age of 20 years.
ü The axial length of the eye should not be more than 25.5 mm
as measured by IOL master.
ü At least twelve months should have lapsed post uncomplicated
stable LASIK. No history or evidence of any complication.
ü The post LASIK corneal thickness as measured by a corneal
pachymeter should not be less than 450 microns.
ü Individuals with high refractive errors (>6D) prior to
LASIK are to be excluded.
ü Candidates must not suffer from color or night blindness.
Ø Ocular Muscle Balance:
Eyes should be well aligned and should
have normal binocular vision. No manifest squint permissible. Convergence must
be adequate. Ocular movements full and free Ocular muscle balance can be tested
with the cover test, the Maddox rod or an approved vision tester.
Ø At 6 meters
ü Exophoria 6 prism Diopters
ü Esophoria 6 prism Diopters
ü Hyperphoria 1 prism Diopters
ü Hypophoria 1 prism Diopters
At
33 cm
ü Exophoria 16 prism Diopters
ü Esophoria 6 prism Diopters
ü Hyperphoria 1 prism Diopters
ü Hypophoria 1 prism Diopters
Candidates are suggested to apply for all eligible branches,
so if you get rejected for flying branch due to high medical standards, you may
get a chance to join other branch of Indian Air Force like Technical, GDOC etc.
Candidates are required to go for medical checkup before
going for SSB interview or Medical tests, so that if you find any problem which
is curable, you could start working on it at the earliest.
What
are 14 Dental Points
Medical test (Dental Points) is conducted by SSB
board for recommended candidates after SSB interviews, it is a very
crucial part of selection procedure, generally, and in each batch the medically
unfit rate goes up to 45% - 55 %. Candidate can be declared unfit medically for
one or various health issues. Aspirants must go for proper body checkups before
proceeding towards interviews, also a My Target Service Selection Board (SSB) regular monthly check is mandatory. 14 dental points are
one of the must have thing during medicals, let's talk more about it.
Something about
point system on teeth:
o Teeth which are
not considered necessary for efficient work are given with 1 point each.
o Teeth assumed to
be essential are allotted with 2 points each.
o Each incisor,
canine, 1st and 2nd premolars holds 1 point provided their corresponding lower
teeth are present.
o Each 1st and 2nd
molar and well developed 3rd molar holds 2 points provided they are in good
opposition to corresponding teeth in the lower jaw.
o If 3rd molar is
not well developed, it holds only 1 point.
When we have all 16 teeth intact in the upper jaw with a
good functional opposition to corresponding teeth present in the lower jaw, the
total points can be 20 to 22 ( based on 3rd molars are well
developed or not).
Conditions for
14 dental points:
o When we have all
16 teeth intact in the upper jaw with a good functional opposition to corresponding
teeth present in the lower jaw, the total points can be 20 to 22 ( based on 3rd
molars are well developed or not).
o Any 4 of the 6
anterior and any 6 of the 10 posterior. When following teeth will be present in
the upper jaw and in good functional opposition to corresponding teeth in the
lower jaw.
o Provided there
are at least 14 dental points in the mouth, all these teeth must be sound and
repairable. The minimum number of points required is to be medically fit are 14
points.
Conclusion:
In very rare cases, aspirant may have less than 14 dental
points, but few may have damaged teeth due to some accident or any other health
issues. Though there are very rare cases of getting unfit due to less dental
points, but as said precaution is better than cure. It is advisable to go for
proper oral cleanup before medical examinations.
Excessive
Carrying Angle of the Elbow
Many candidates are asking regarding the consequences of
excessive carrying angle of the elbow. Once you clear SSB interview, you need
to go for medical examination in which you may get checked for carrying angle
of the elbow. You might get temporary rejection if the carrying angle of your
elbow exceeds the normal limit.
Let’s discuss more about what is carrying angle of the elbow
and how does it affect your medical examination after SSB interview.
What is Carrying
Angle of the Elbow?
When your arms are held out at the sides and your palms are
facing forward, your forearm and hands should normally be about 5 to 15 degrees
away from the body. This is the normal "carrying
angle" of the elbow.
Why do we have
carrying angle?
This angle allows your forearms to clear the hips when
swinging your arms, such as during walking. It is also important when carrying
objects.
Why normal
carrying angle of the elbow is important?
As said above, normal carrying angle of the elbow helps us
to carry objects easily. In defence, we physical activities a lot, so having
normal carrying elbow is must for defence services. Certain fractures of the
elbow can increase the carrying angle of elbow, causing the arms to stick out
too much from the body. This is called an excessive carrying angle. If the
angle is decreased so that the arm points toward the body, it is called a
"gunstock deformity." Treatment of excessive carrying angle of the
elbow Only your doctor can advise whether any of these treatments are
appropriate for your specific medical situation. Always discuss all treatment
options with your doctor before making a decision, including whether to start
or discontinue any treatment plan.
If you think you
carrying angle is not normal, then it is better to consult a doctor for proper
measurement and cure.
Sweaty Palms in SSB Medical Examination If you have sweaty
palms, it may create a problem for you in medical examination which happens after
ssb interview for recommended candidates. Medical officer check palms to make
sure the candidate is not suffering from Hyperhidrosis. Hyperhidrosis is
a condition in which you may suffer from excessive sweating of the hands, feet
and armpits etc.
To check for Hyperhidrosis, medical officer examines your
palms, you may be asked for closing your fist for some time and later asked to
grab a finger tightly in your palm. The medical officer will try to free his
finger from your palm, and if it happens easily, it’s because your palms are sweaty
and guess what, you may have sweaty palm. But don't freak out, getting little
amount of sweat on our palm is very common, but some of us actually have
Hyperhidrosis.
Not going much into medical terms, let me simplify this
article, what all me need is a cure for sweaty palm. Before going further,
let’s see some facts about sweating and sweaty palm.
1. Sweating helps the body stay cool and it is very natural.
2. We sweat more in warm temperatures, when we exercise, or
in response to situations that make us nervous, angry, embarrassed, or afraid.
3. Someone with Hyperhidrosis, may sweat without any trigger
and he has overactive sweaty glands.
4. Hyperhidrosis affects between 1 and 2% of the world's
population.
Treatment
for sweaty Palm:
"Having to deal with sweaty palms is a frustrating
problem, but luckily there are a number of natural treatments that can help
stop or reduce sweating and treat some of the underlying causes. Nat mur. Is a
great solution that helps reduce excessive sweating and clamminess? Lupulus as
well as Castoreum and Argentum Nitricum help to address sweating, especially
when related to nervousness, panic, anxiety, or obsessive thoughts. Lastly, the
ingredient Syphilinum helps to control fluid levels in the body, while also
helping to control body odor, which commonly accompanies excessive sweating.
Bottom Line:
Do not worry, as said, this problem is not so common and if
your hands sweat it could be perfectly normal, but if you think it sweats more
and looks unnatural, please consult a doctor.
Disclaimer: All treatments mentioned above are just for
reference purposes, you are suggested to consult a doctor before going through
any treatment process.
How
to Avoid Sweaty Palms & Feet
(Hyperhidrosis)?
What is Hyperhidrosis?
It is a medical condition in which the body shows
excessive sweating, irrespective of the body temperature. It is quite normal
for our body to sweat in order to regulate the body temperature.
But a person with hyperhidrosis, sweats excessively and
unpredictably irrespective of the surrounding environment temperature or
humidity levels. Its hard to predict when and how much they would sweat. There
is a lot of information on the internet regarding Hyperhidrosis. For some basic
info, read this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperhidrosis
What causes it?
Though there are various claims till present day, no one
knows the primary cause for it.
Hyperhidrosis: Permanent Rejection Criteria in the Indian
Armed Forces
1.8.3. Certain skin conditions are apt to become active
and incapacitating under tropical conditions. An individual is unsuitable for
service if he has a definite history or signs of chronic or recurrent skin
diseases. Some such conditions are described below:
(1) Palmoplantar Hyperhydrosis – Some amount of
Palmoplantar Hyperhydrosis is physiological, considering the situation that recruits
face during medical examination. However, conditions with significant
Palmoplantar Hyperhdrosis should be considered unfit.
How to cure
Hyperhidrosis?
Till date there is no concrete cure for this medical
condition. Even I was left helpless when I got to know this. But soon I
realized that there are lot of ways to mitigate the intensity and frequency
of sweating.
For mild hyperhidrosis, the best cure is to apply
antiperspirant lotion like klima, drysol etc. in your palms and feet every
night. But do consult a dermatologist in prior to avoid any allergy.
For advanced hyperhidrosis, the best cure would be the
Iontophoresis technique.
What is Iontophoresis?
It is a treatment used extensively in hospitals and
clinics worldwide that passes mild controlled ‘Micro’ electrical currents into
the skin in areas where excessive sweating is a problem. The
current is transferred to the body in most cases using
simple tap water alone.
Treatments are simple to perform at home and unaided.
Simply place electrodes in the provided trays, fill with tap water, switch on
the iontophoresis machine setup. Then simply place the hands and or feet into
the trays and the circuit will close and treatment will begin automatically.
Do it yourself Iontophoresis device:-
Things needed:
Plastic trays (30 cm x 20 cm approx.)
– 2 Nos.
9 Volt radio battery – 1 No.
9 V Battery Clip Connector – 1 No.
Alligator clips – 2 Nos.
Aluminium foil sheet (used to pack
hot rotis)
Connecting wires
Baking soda
Table salt
How to make
and use the setup?
1. Cover the Plastic trays with aluminum foil. Connect the
battery to the covered trays using wires and alligator clips.
2. Pour tap water to a certain level (so as to cover your
palms) and add some table salt and baking soda (1 teaspoon) to make the water
more conductive.
3. Place both your hands in the trays in order to close
the circuit and let the current flow through your body. You might feel a little
tingling sensation but do not worry, as the current intensity from a battery is
not high enough to give you a shock.
4. After doing this for 15 mints, now interchange your
hands and keep it in the other tray (left hand in right tray & right hand
in left tray) and continue the treatment for another 15 mints.
5. Take this treatment more often initially i.e. once in a
day during the 1st week and then gradually reduce it to just two times in a week,
as you may start noticing a reduction in your sweat levels from the second week
itself.

Knock
Knees Problem and Treatment
Knock knees can
be one of the reason to be unfit for Indian army or Indian Defence
forces. If you have knock knees then you will be declared as unfit during SSB
interview medical examination. This medical condition is very rare but few
candidates may have knock knees, also, sometimes candidates misunderstands
about knock knees problem and take tension unnecessarily.
Let's discuss what knock knees is and how it affects your
medical extermination in SS interviews.
What are knock
knees?
Knock knees are deformities at the knee, in which knees of a
standing person touches each other’s but not the ankles. In other words, in a
normal standing position, a person with knock knees has gap between ankles but
not between knees.
Do I have knock
knees problem?
Most of the candidates are not aware about the procedure by
which a medical officer check knock knees, so they just keep worrying by
checking themselves in different ways. The correct way is to stand simply and
keep very little gap (3 inches) between your ankles, check whether your knees
are touching or no, even if it is touching a little, it is just normal. Real
knock knees problem won't let your ankles touch each other. Check the below
picture for more clarity on this.
Treatment and
Exercise for Knock Knees
Knock knees problems basically starts from childhood and
gets cured by its own as we start growing, but some of us do not get the proper
development of bones which leads to knockknees. This problem won't let us to
walk or run freely, which makes it a reason to be unfit for Indian armed
forces. Candidates with little knock knees can start exercising and yoga to
cure this problem, few of the exercise and treatments for knock knees are:
o Take vitamin D
and calcium supplements, vitamin C supplements.
o Virasana, or
hero pose, is effective in treating flat feet and knock knees.
o Keep a block
between thighs and try to move your legs as close as you can, hold it for 3 mints,
keep repeating.
o In a standing
position, bring the legs 4 feet apart and stretch the arms out to the side.
Turn the right toes to the right and deeply bend the right knee. Activate the
arches and keep the right knee touching the wall. Hold for 30 seconds and
repeat on the other side.
o For more on knock-knees
treatment do refer: livestrong.com Do not misunderstand this problem, hope this
articles clears most of your doubts you are suggested to consult a physician
for proper care and treatment, this post is just for basic information on knock
knees.
What
Is Flat Foot and Its Treatment?
Flat feet or flat foot sometimes becomes a serious problem during
SSB interview medicals.
You may often find a candidate who has got TR [temporary rejection]
due to flat foot in medical examination. However, a person don't feel much
pain and able to do regular day to day activity, but it is considered as one of
the reason to be unfit for Defence Forces.
What is Flat
feet aka Flat Foot?
Ans: One can have
flat feet when the arch on the inside of his/her feet is flattened, which
results in the entire sole of foot to touch the ground during standing
position.
What are the
cause of Flat feet aka Flat Foot?
Ans: You may notice
that a baby born with flat feet, and with time our feet develops an arch, for some
of us it may not develop during childhood. Age, accidents or injury can be one
of the other reasons for flat feet.
How to detect
Flat feet aka Flat Foot?
Ans: It is possible
to detect just by looking at your feet or foot, which actually happens during medicals.
Medical officer may ask you to keep your toes on ground and lifting your heel
to certain level, from this he can check the amount of arch on your feet.
NORMAL
ARCH
Wet Test: You can do the wet test at home:
1. Pour a thin layer of water into a shallow pan
2. Wet the sole of your foot.
3. Step onto a shopping bag or a blank piece of heavy paper.
4. Step off and look down
HIGH
ARCH
Results: There can be three different results:
1. Normal Arch: Your feet are normal so relax.
2. Low Arch: Can create some problem during medicals.
3. High Arch: Can be considered as a normal for medical point
of view.
Treatment for
Flat feet aka Flat Foot
LOW ARCH
you can follow
some exercise to reduce flat feet by increasing arch.
o Wear shoes which
support arch.
o Keep your heels
on tennis ball with big toes touching the ground?
o Lift your toes
by keeping heels on ground, hold it for 10-15 seconds, keep on repeating of 4-5
times.
o Sit and lift
your right feet and touch the last toe finger of the left feet.
o At last consult
a physician also.
Conclusion
In most of the cases one who gets TR for low arch (flat
foot), clears it in the review medical board. One with such case must do the
regular exercise to reduce the flat foot.
How to Gain
Weight?
"Patla papad" "lakdi" "X Ray"
and what not. You have heard these disgusting words many times, but you don't
know what to do. You really stuff yourself up to the brim, but remain the same.
You
have become habitual of the offensive and scornful remarks
by the people of your entourage.
Well, it’s time to get over the period of haplessness. For
most of us, losing weight is an uphill task. However, gaining weight is much
difficult than losing the same. It takes a disciplined and concentrated effort
to achieve the desired weight.
Having a well-controlled and fit body is very important for
the point of view of the SSB interview.
The medical guidelines for the selection in the forces are
sacrosanct. Therefore, one must be within the range of the height-weight chart
in order to be deemed fit for services. We will discuss certain diet and
exercise tips which would enable you to gain weight in a healthy and safe manner.
DIET for
Underweight
Being underweight is in no way a license to gorge on
unhealthy fast foods like pizzas, burgers, puffs, pastries, noodles etc.
Although you require more calories, these calories should be from a healthy
source.
1. Eat at least SIX times a day. Yes I am right, eating
heavily 3 times won't just do.
2. Include milk shakes, peanut butter, bananas, mangoes, dry
fruits in your diet.
3. Snack on healthy items such as energy bars, fruit juices,
vegetable sandwiches, pastas, etc.
4. Cheese and Paneer is a good source of nutrition for the
vegetarians. While red meat, fish and eggs are an excellent and fecund source
of calories for the carnivorous people.
5. You should be eating something every 2 to 2.5 hours.
Note: Don't take any
supplement without consulting a renowned physician.
EXERCISE for
Underweight
Diet alone will never lead to propitious outcomes. Your
success is hinged upon the correct combination of diet and exercise.
1. Professional gym is the best place to be in order to gain
weight. Strength training exercises are very important to give you muscle and
volumes to your overall weight
2. If you can't go to a gym, perform strength training
exercises like surya namaskar, pushups, and sit-ups at home.
3. Contrary to the existing belief, cardio is also a must to
keep the balance of the body intact. 30 mints of slow walking or cycling (slow
cardio) 3-4 times a week is recommended.
4. Focus on full body exercises than individual muscle
groups.
5. It is advised not to club cardio and muscle training
together. If you are doing muscle training in the evening, do some cardio in
the morning and vice versa.
Just keep calm. Gaining weight is not that difficult as it
seems to be. It is just a matter of few days and you will be able to see
genuine results. Multitudes have been benefited by this regime and now it is
your turn.
Permanent Body Tattoos Can
Be a Rejection?
We have got lot of queries from candidates asking whether
tattoos are allowed in Indian Army or permanent body tattoos can be a
rejection in medical after SSB interview. Yes, it can create some problem
for you in medicals and these are checked during medical examinations.
Official Statement
on Permanent Body Tattoos
Permanent Body Tattoos: Permanent body tattoos are only permitted on inner face of
forearm i.e. from inside of elbow to the wrist and on the reverse side of
palm/back (dorsal) side of hand.
Permanent body tattoos on any other part of the body are
not acceptable and candidates will be barred from further selection.
Tribes with tattoos marks on the face or body as per their existing custom and
traditions will be permitted on a case to case basis.
Conclusion:
So if you have permanent body tattoos anywhere else on the body except
permitted part, you can be in serious problem. And, if you are thinking of
getting a tattoo and also want to join the Indian Army, it is better to choose
the best for you.
Regime
to Get Fit Quickly
Physical fitness is a pivotal prerequisite for joining the
forces but we often tend to neglect it and postpone it. We are today sharing a
model fitness plan to be followed religiously to lose those extra kilos fast
and become like Akshay Kumar in HOLIDAY (not kidding) But before following this
plan keep in mind that in order to change your physicality, you must not binge
on fried items like aloo chips, pakodas, vada pavs and say strict no no to
sugar like colas, ice creams cakes chocolates etc.
Your diet should consist of moderate carbs, proteins,
limited fat, vitamins and minerals. It is advised not to eat after 8pm in the
night and not to skip any meal. Also drink lots of water throughout the day.
Include fruits and leafy vegetables in your diet.
Now that we are through with the diet, let’s get going.
All of these exercises are simple and can easily be done
without having to visit the gymnasium.
1. Stretching followed by warm-up(slow running) for 5
minutes
2. Skipping rope or standing jumps- 3 to 5 minutes
depending upon fitness level
3. Pushups- 3 sets (12, 10, 8 times each).Those who cannot
do even one push up can try knee ups by using knee as a support to do push ups
4. Squats-10 times. Squat is a position in which you couch
or sit with knees bent close to the heels with your thighs parallel to the floor.
It is a full body work out that primarily targets hips, thighs and buttocks.
5. Lunges- 10 times. Walking Lunges are very high
intensity exercises that help in strengthening thighs and hips. Stand tall with
your feet shoulder-width apart. Now step forward with your right foot the land
on your left knee and then on forefoot. Make sure that you keep your knees at
90 degrees approximately. Stand on forward leg with the help of rear leg. Alter
the leg and repeat it again
6. Sit ups- 3 sets of 10 repetitions. 30 seconds rest
after each set
7. Running (moderate intensity)- 10 minutes make sure you
break into sweat and have to rush to the shower after completing the run.
8. Cool down. Take deep breathes and relax yourself.
Take 1-2 minutes rest after finishing each workout listed
here. This workout is to be done 6 times a week. Apart from this playing a game
like soccer, rugby, basketball and badminton can also help you to shed some
weight.
Along these exercises one can also do some yoga to achieve
faster results.
I have tried and tested this regime on many people
including myself and found it do be very beneficial. You will start seeing
results within a week after this regime. It is advised that you keep elevating
the difficulty level every week.
