The Thematic Apperception test (TAT), Picture Perception and Description Test - SSB Interview

How to write TAT or PPDT Stories

SSB consists of three techniques, Psyche, GTO and the Interview one. Tests differ but the technique is the same and the technique is looking for suitability. Means possession! Projection and rating, ranking and grading of OLQs of the optimum satisfaction of the “Assessors”

I will show you one of picture and would like to make up a story on the picture. The story should be as dramatic and imaginative as possible. Tell me what is happening in this picture?, what led up to it? And what will the outcome be?
Describe as fully as you can, the thoughts, feeling, action and emotions of the character but please do not describe the picture as you are required to write a story with the blank card. The subject is asked (Subject here, would mean the candidate) to imagine and write a story about it. To encourage the flow of the story, I will suggest you to bear these aspects in the mind and to act like this.
What is happening?

How is it happening?

What happens then?

How does it turn out? And the like at the end, I will enquire further as to the sources of the story. Whether they reflect the personal experiences or whether they are suggested by movies, books, television or from your surrounding experiences or whether they were just ‘Make Up” as they are being told. I will write a story on the below scene.

In this picture, a D.R. is delivering letter to an officer who is shown to addressing his cadets.

Story:
Lt. Pritam a lecturer and NCC officer of 2 BN Chandigarh. Got order from his C.O. to postpone annual camp scheduled at sector 17 Ramlila Ground near ISBT in the month of Sep 2014. In turn he has to report to Jammu’s ISBT where the NCC Cadets will be waiting for the relief operation for earth quake victims. He sat will all the cadets immediately and mutually discusses the task ahead. A group of cadets and youngsters volunteered to arrange the founds from welfare organizations like, lion’s and rotary clubs. All the purchases like clothes, fruits, medicines etc. were made within a short period of eight hours. After reaching the spot they undertook the responsibilities of 50 victims, they nursed victims for 10 days. Pritam and his cadets were proud of helping the people in crisis.

VERY IMPORTANT FOR SSB ASPIRANTS
This (theme) interprets that Pritam gladly accepted his officer’s decision to undertake a new challenge without bothering the postponement of the annual camp. It shows the scene of responsibility and dedication to the cause. Sitting with all the cadets and mutually discussing all the required things reveal initiative and social adjustments. Getting along with friends to discuss and decide mutually reflects the accommodating spirit and cooperation. Taking upon the task to arrange the founds shows resourcefulness with decision making. Commencing operation with the authorities including nursing the victims from a week to 10days strengthens their determination, confidence and liveness. Right from the beginning, arranging all the things in a systematic manner with proper steps taken in time with right approach of the places and persons, arrival and departure, for the commencement and accomplishment of the task shows logical reasoning, cohesion, practical effective and efficient intelligence, initiative and decision making coupled with organization and proper planning.

Officer like Qualities being revealed
a)    Accommodating spirit
b)    Sense of responsibility
c)    Cooperation
d)    Logical reasoning
e)    Planning and organization
f)     Effective intelligence
g)    Decision making ability
h)   Determination and confidence
i)     Initiative
j)     Liveliness

This story reveals more than nine OLQs. Any story revealing five to six qualities is also recommendable, if it carries the natural projection of a candidate’s ability and reality.

Neither! Myself nor any psychologist will suggest you to follow a copy and imitate his planning. Take the idea and develop your planning according to your capacity and leadership which you possess because leader or Hero in your story means your alter ego, your deployed commander, Hero means indirectly you, Hero means a person similar to your age, Sex and mood who can represent you 100%.

The leader has to be confident, assured, bold, daring, he must be ready to take risks, show initiative and display interest in growing the opportunities. He must have determination, perseverance to carry on inspite of difficulties. He must accept new challenges cheerfully and seek out new responsibility on his own initiative. He must have the courage to face any audience and put across his views eloquently, cheerfully, logically and convincingly. He must maintain self control under all the circumstances and should be able to assert himself where the occasion demands it.

“The psychological interpretation and evaluation says the psychologist in the system of selection is not interested, what you are writing but from where you are writing and further the doctrine of evaluation and assessment says that the psychologist does not see on the line but he reads between lines.”

SSB INTERVIEW - GOOD AND BAD HABITS

A very important question was asked by someone regarding a very important question of SSB. This question is asked in different formats but the answer which they are looking for is related to your personality... Questions are: • Write 3 good and bad qualities of yourself? • Write 3 good qualities of your friend or what do you like about your friend? (actually they are your qualities) • Write 3 bad qualities of your friend or what is it that you don't like in your friend? • Which are the three qualities of yours that your friends like? (your good qualities) • Which are the three qualities of yours that your enemies like? ( your weaknesses) What is the purpose of these questions? The first purpose is to see if you know about your own self or not, its a SWOT analysis of your self (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). If a person knows about him/her self he can handle any situation and has a better judgment power. The second purpose of these questions like...
